Mars Bugaoan, a Filipino artist known for his innovative approach to printmaking and installation art, traces his artistic journey back to his rural upbringing in Barangay Mambabanga, Luna, Isabela. Born and raised in this scenic locale, Bugaoan’s early exposure to art was primarily through the vibrant and creative expressions showcased during the town fiestas. The colorful festivities served as his first encounter with the transformative power of art, igniting a lifelong passion for creative expression.

Despite the absence of formal art institutions in his hometown, Bugaoan’s fascination with visual storytelling flourished. He found inspiration in the pages of their encyclopedia at home, whose colorful illustrations sparked his imagination. His artistic inclination became evident during his school years, where he excelled in slogan and poster-making competitions.

Initially drawn to advertising, Bugaoan pursued a degree in Advertising Arts at the University of Santo Tomas, graduating cum laude in 2009. However, his career trajectory changed as he delved deeper into the world of graphic design and marketing. It was then when his passion for art resurfaced, compelling him to explore new avenues of creative expression. He began experimenting with printmaking, particularly monotype prints on heated plastic bags. His unconventional approach to printmaking garnered attention, leading to exhibitions and achievements both locally and internationally. Notably, Bugaoan was honored as one of the awardees of the Cultural Center of the Philippines’ prestigious Thirteen Artist Awards in 2021.

Bugaoan’s works encompass a wide range of themes, often revolving around the concept of growth and evolution. Through his installations and printmaking techniques, he explores the interplay between found objects and artistic expression, challenging viewers to reconsider their relationship with the material world.
