Michiel Coxie the Elder was a painter who lived from 1499 to 1592 in Flanders (in today’s Belgium). He was a painter of altarpieces and portraits, a draftsman, and a designer of stained glass windows. Respected throughout his career, Coxie served as court painter for Emperor Charles V of the Holy Roman Empire and King Felipe II of Spain.

Described as the “Flemish Raphael,” Coxie was a prolific artist in the traditional Flemish oil on panel technique. His style reflected a deep knowledge of classical antiquity and Renaissance art. He was also known for his innovative style, which served as an inspiration to succeeding generations of Flemish artists such as Reubens.
