Dr. S. Chandrasekaran was born on November 29, 1959, in Singapore. He commenced his artistic journey at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA), earning a Diploma in Fine Arts in 1988. Following this, he pursued further studies at Curtin University of Technology in Perth, Australia. He obtained a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1990, a Master of Arts (Visual Arts) in 1997, and a Doctor of Creative Arts in 2007.

As a performance artist, Dr. Chandrasekaran explores the interaction of the body with historical narratives and its definition within contemporary society. His particular focus lies in Asian aesthetics and their relationship to modern art in Southeast Asia. His artistic endeavors frequently address themes of identity and culture, drawing inspiration from his Indian heritage. Notable works during this period include "Kala Chakra" (1991) and "Atman" (1992).

In addition to his artistic practice, Dr. Chandrasekaran co-founded the Biological Arts Theatre (BAT) alongside Gary Cass, choreographer Santha Bhaskar, and artist Madhura Nayak. BAT operates as a research network for artists and non-artists, fostering the creation of new works with an emphasis on contemporary art. In 2011, with support from the National Arts Council's Arts Creation Fund, BAT developed "Infinite Saree," a project aimed at exploring research-based biological art theater.

Dr. S. Chandrasekaran has been honored with numerous awards, scholarships, and grants for his contributions to the arts. He was the inaugural recipient of Singapore's Young Artist Award for Visual Arts. Dr. Chandrasekaran has represented Singapore at prestigious exhibitions, including the Havana Biennial in Cuba, the 1st Asia Pacific Triennial in Brisbane, the Asia-Pacific Performance Art Festival in Canada, the International Performance Art Festival in Poland, the 49th Venice Biennale, and the 8th Festival of Contemporary Art in Slovenia.
