ArtSpeak: Making Things Move by Dr. Giovanni Tapang

Tuesday, 30 Sep 2014, 4 PM to 6 PM

Drawing an intersection between visual art and mechanical science, Dr. Giovanni Tapang, Associate Professor at the National Institute of Physics, University of the Philippines Diliman, will be giving a talk titled Making Things Move. It will explore how current technology enables everyone to create physical objects that can sense the world and allow interactivity. Dr. Tapang and his team were instrumental in the creation of Martha Atienza’s exhibition Endless Hours at Sea on view at the Ateneo Art Gallery until September 30. He will discuss available tools and techniques and relate them to the methods used in Atienza’s exhibit

The talk seeks to give students and enthusiasts an introduction to the various methods they can use to animate things, make them talk, and blink using special tools and techniques. Other rapid prototyping technologies that allow one to hold ideas and concepts in their hands such as 3D printers, laser cutters, and CNC machines will also be discussed.
