Join Ateneo Art Gallery this July 20, Thursday for an ArtSpeak with artist-filmmaker Shireen Seno for a screening of her film “To Pick a Flower.”

Seno’s video essay comments on stock photos taken from the period of American colonization of the Philippines between 1898 and 1946. She takes note of the similarities between the commodification of human and material resources, and how such portrayal in images instilled ideals about political power and colonial rule.




About Shireen Seno

Seno is a Filipino visual artist, filmmaker, and curator born in Tokyo, Japan. Her work focuses on memory, history, and image-making in relation to home. Seno’s films have been screened at renowned festivals and institutions worldwide. She is the recipient of numerous grants and awards including the Thirteen Artists Award and has recently been awarded a fellowship at the DAAD Artist-in-Residence for Film in Berlin. She is currently completing a studio residency at the Visual Studies Workshop in Rochester, New York and is also the co-founder of the film and video studio Los Otros.

This ArtSpeak is a public program organized in line with the exhibition “Muntadas: Exercises on Past and Present Memories,” ON-VIEW at the third floor galleries at the Ateneo Art Gallery until 29 July 2023. Learn more about the exhibition here.
