Matrix II: Women Artists from the Collections of the Ateneo Art Gallery and Ambeth R Ocampo

To mark the annual celebration of March as Women’s Month, the Ateneo Art Gallery unveils Matrix II: Women Artists from the Collections of the Ateneo Art Gallery and Ambeth R Ocampo this March 16, Saturday at the Mr & Mrs Ching Tan and Mr & Mrs Chung Te Galleries. The first iteration in 2002 titled Matrix: Works by Filipino Women in the Ateneo Art Gallery, was curated by the museum’s first Curator, Emmanuel Torres, and was held in the modest spaces of the Ateneo de Manila University’s Special Collections Building. It featured 17 women artists that represented 20th century art practices, from the 1950s to the 1990s.

Following 22 years after the first iteration, Matrix II brings together over 40 women artists, selected from this university museum’s permanent collection and from what will be part of the Ambeth R Ocampo bequest. These artists represent at least four generations with works representing aesthetic and personal concerns, as well as social and political advocacies. Their practices follow varied paths as defined by the limitations set by society as well as by the opportunities offered and made accessible to them.

The exhibition also coincides with the opening of The World According to Charlie Co: Drawings, Paintings, Sculptures and Mixed Media Works at the Wilson L Sy Prints and Drawings Gallery at the second floor of the Ateneo Art Gallery. Following its first mounting in 2020, guests can look forward to added works in the 2024 iteration, ranging from paintings to mixed media works from the artist’s personal collection.

The Ateneo Art Gallery will also be offering special museum hours for a limited time only. Effective March 17 to July 6, 2024, guests may also visit the museum on Sundays, from 9:00am to 4:00pm. Museum operations remain closed on regular and University holidays.

Matrix II: Women Artists from the Collections of the Ateneo Art Gallery and Ambeth R Ocampo is on-view from 16 March to 3 August 2024 at the Mr & Mrs Ching Tan Gallery and Mr & Mrs Chung Te Gallery, UGF Ateneo Art Gallery.
