Artists' Talk with Cian Dayrit and Vien Valencia

30 November 2023, Thursday

2:00 PM - 3:30 PM

Ben Chan ArtSuite, 2F Ateneo Art Gallery

Soledad V Pangilinan Arts Wing, Areté, Ateneo de Manila University

Deadline on or before 11:59 PM of 29 November 2023

Ateneo Art Gallery invites you to an Artist’s Talk with Cian Dayrit and Vien Valencia where they will discuss their respective artistic practices in line with their shortlisted exhibitions at the Ateneo Art Awards 2023.

Cian Dayrit’s practice interrogates dominant notions of space and power through the use of tools and materials representative of institutions such as the state, museums, the military, and the church, among others. In his shortlisted exhibition The Austere Enclave, he examines the intersections of ecology and policy, focusing particularly on how political-economic ideologies such as neoliberalism disfigure landscapes and affect how the people within them function and live.

Centering his artistry on community-based works, Vien Valencia founded Nomad Projects to address changing landscapes in various local communities. As an artist, his body of work tends to be more process-centric, with a particular emphasis in involving the local voice in his method of creation. In his shortlisted exhibition your age, my age, and the age of the river, Valencia travels to Tanay, Rizal to work with the Dumagat-Remontado indigenous group in saving the Tinipak River from the Kaliwa Dam project, which threatens to destroy not only the community’s means of livelihood, but also effectively erase the cultural and environmental history of the landscape.

Playing with Vines and Flowers Workshop with Tekla Tamoria

02 December 2023, Saturday

10:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Ben Chan ArtSuite, 2F Ateneo Art Gallery

Soledad V Pangilinan Arts Wing, Areté, Ateneo de Manila University

Join Tekla Tamoria in a workshop wherein participants can create flowering vines out of discarded textiles. The workshop will be prefaced by a short talk wherein Tamoria will share her experiences from her recently-concluded artist's residency in Japan.

The practice of visual and performance artist Tekla Tamoria involves modifying discarded everyday materials such as paper and textile into new forms. Her creations often take on a more playful turn, with works that range from public installations to wearable art. In her AAA 2023 exhibition Kiliti Ng Taong Nakaupo Sa May Tabi, Tamoria draws inspiration from her personal experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic. She presents a series of works that portray that mix of anticipation and nervous laughter that marked the height of the pandemic and the uncertainties that directly followed it.

*Workshop participants are required to bring a sewing kit and old clothes, preferably green fabric and other floral colors. Other materials will be provided during the day of the program.

These ArtSpeak programs are organized in line with the Ateneo Art Awards 2023 exhibition, on-view until 02 December 2023 at the Fredesvinda Almeda Consunji Gallery, Ambeth R Ocampo Gallery, Elizabeth Gokongwei Gallery, and Alicia P Lorenzo Gallery, 3F Ateneo Art Gallery, Soledad V Pangilinan Arts Wing, Areté, Ateneo de Manila University.
